Marcum launches diversity scholarship fund
Marcum LLP, a Top 20 Firm based in New York, has announced the launch of its Marcum Diversity Scholarship Fund as part of the firm’s ongoing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion program.
The scholarship fund was created to help bolster a diverse pipeline of future accountants, especially within the Black and Latino communities, to better increase representation across the accounting profession. Scholarship recipients will be awarded a one-time, $5,000 grant for to go toward one academic year. Grant recipients will also have access to internship opportunities, mentoring, and Marcum’s Associate Resource Groups.
The program was first piloted in the fall of 2021 at selected universities in the Mid-Atlantic region, but will now include Marcum’s presence in California and Illinois.
“We felt that combining financial support with practical work experience and professional mentoring would deliver the greatest value to the students,” said Rachael Gibson, Marcum’s director of diversity, equity and inclusion, in a statement. “Supporting the education of our industry’s future professionals is the most direct way we can affect change and cultivate the next generation of accounting leaders. For all of the discussion around diversifying our profession and encouraging more talented young people to pursue careers in accounting, Marcum is literally putting our resources where our mouth is.”
To be eligible, students must be a full-time undergraduate sophomore or junior accounting students; have declared accounting as their major; maintained a minimum overall GPA of 3.0; be involved in at least one extracurricular activity; and have not accepted full-time employment at another accounting firm.
